Have you ever notice when you are on holiday you act a bit differently than normal? Maybe you dress a bit more flamboyantly or do things you never do at home. Sometimes we do these things and never pay any attention.
Last week I got my hair cut and as I was leaving I mentioned I had purchased a pair of dark rimmed glasses when I was in Florence last December. I currently wear rimless frames. So this bold look is most different. And that is when, Michael, the hairdresser said, “When we are elsewhere, we pretend to be someone else.” He preceded to tell stories of when his salon was in a major Cambridge hotel and women would come in from out of town to have their hair colored. Most of us are most particular about our hair beauticians. A stranger coloring my hair? Unthinkable unless I am pretending to be a red head instead of all white! And then I told stories of when I go into the Caribbean that I will not repeat here!
Did you ever notice that in some of the best tourist places there is so much to buy? Art galleries, antique shops, designer dress stores and Gucci eyeglass frames! When we shop on holiday it is more than just memorabilia, we purchase to have what someone else has. We often spend what we would never do in our normal budget. We pretend we are someone else. Someone with money to spend and it feels good. We pretend for just a day or two but the memories last forever. Sometimes I go with a shopping plan knowing I will buy, because I am not a shopper. Now, with my Florence glasses and gloves, I can show off all winter and pretend a bit!
