A couple weeks ago I spent a long weekend at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts. In the rolling hills of the Berkshire Mountains there are several very exquisite resorts. When I was invited to the Canyon Ranch I thought I would have a wonderful relaxing experience at an excellent spa. But what did I know?
Yes the Ranch is a spa and one can receive all the usual massage treatments. I even had a cosmetic consultation. What fun! BUT what the Ranch is known for is its health and fitness. From 6 am to 9 pm there are complimentary activities: several athletic options every hour: water aerobics, stretch classes, weight lifting training, tennis lessons, guided hiking, biking and golfing, cross country skiing, kayaking and canoeing, zip-lining, dance classes, yoga, and Zumba classes. I am sure there are more! Along with using your body there are classes for your mind: mediation, spiritual learning, breathing lessons and more. For the creative mind there are cooking, painting and knitting classes plus arts and crafts. Canyon Ranch is a place to rejuvenate your whole mind, body and spirit.
It is for anyone and everyone. You can choose whatever you want to do or as little. There are men, couples, straight and gay, and of course lots of women. There are groups coming for all kinds of reasons. One group I met were there for a 50th birthday party all to rejuvenate themselves for the next 50.
Then there is the extremely healthy food. Most of the meals were low in fat and salt. One can ask for salt and rolls and butter for any meal. You may also choose as much as you would like from the menu. You may try several half servings. There is a large salad bar at lunch and dinner. And there is always cookies and ice cream for dessert, if you wish! There is no alcohol served anywhere on the property. One may bring beverages to their room and share with friends. But alcohol is not to be bought throughout the resort. Many come to detox and do not want to be tempted! I found that after all the exercise and spa treatments and healthy food I did not want an alcoholic beverage. Though the last night my friends and I shared!
There are several Canyon Ranch resorts, Tucson, Arizona and Miami Florida. The southwest property is similar to Lenox but in the desert. The Miami resort is more like a hotel and great for a pre or post cruise experience. Since it is in the city many go off the property for dinner and the evening.
There are also Canyon Ranch facilities on several cruise lines: Celebrity, Oceana, Regent and the Queen Mary II.
