What a wonderful combination. Where can you go to do all three? How about southern or northern Spain, southern France, most any place in Italy, some grand spas in the southwestern USA? You name it and I can make it happen. Enjoying very good local food, the peace and quiet of the outdoors and the physical exercise of the body makes for a magnificent holiday.
There are several places where the walks are so popular there are small hotels and Bed and Breakfast’s along the way. For example, in northern Spain, the Camino de Santiago or St. James Way is the most famous of the pilgrims’ trails in Spain. The Camino is far from the only option but all roads lead to Santiago de Campostel! Taking the walk, any part of the 752 kilometer, is not just a pleasant challenge but a grand sense of accomplishment once completed. All your senses will be involved. There are always lots of people along the way to share and join you.
If going by yourself sounds like too much of an adventure and too much work, there are organizations that run groups. Some, like Butterfield and Robinson give all the amenities you will want along the way. Then there is Adventure Center. A bit simpler in accommodations and price but still a great experience. Of course there all the hiking clubs and stores like REI that organize trips. Sometimes you can combine hiking with biking. There are so many options to choose. I had a family bike and hike in the San Juan Islands of Washington. Email or call me – 617-588-4246 – to help you plan
There are planned hiking/walking adventures near to your home. So just take a picnic, your hiking poles, some very good thoughts and go for a walk.
And leave all your electronic devices behind. More on that next week.
