How do travel agents make a living?

I often get asked how I make a living as a travel agent. Some may think we volunteer our time as we are asked for hours of research with no reservations. Others think that we upcharge the reservations we do make. Neither is the case.

The bread and butter of my paycheck comes from hotels, resorts, cruises, tours and international business class tickets. They pay commissions – and not at a penalty to you. While I do charge a modest service fee up front for research and planning of detailed trips, in return you get personalized service, years of hands-on experience and unparalleled knowledge.

With the Internet, many of you are researching and planning on line.  This is just fine!  Do all the homework you wish.  This will make you a wiser traveler.  But in the end, let me make the reservations.  Not only will you be keeping us in business for those airline tickets you like us to reserve, but there are many benefits to you!  I have a list of 23 reasons to use a travel agent!

My number one reason for using a travel agent: You always have an advocate, someone to go to when situations occur, and they do in travel! Second, there may be a better ‘deal’ with a consultant: a lower price, a night free, an upgrade, and extra amenities are all good examples.  This is true for hotels, resorts and cruises.  I am a Virtuoso member, which allows me access to many benefits that I can pass along to you! Also, when you reserve your entire trip in one place, I can assist and anticipate your travel needs, and some you may not know.  Insurance for one…

So use that Internet all you wish.  It is a great tool and can be fun to navigate.   I use it every day to learn the latest and greatest.   Then call me –  Your favorite travel consultant!
